     What is Time-lapsed Photography?

Time-lapse photography is a cinematography technique whereby the frequency at which film frames are captured (the frame rate) is much lower than that which will be used to play the sequence back. When replayed at normal speed, time appears to be moving faster and thus lapsing. For example, an image of a scene may be captured once every second, and then played back at 30 frames per second; the result would be an apparent increase of speed by 30 times. Time-lapse photography can be considered to be the opposite of high speed photography. Processes that would normally appear subtle to the human eye, such as the motion of the sun and stars in the sky, become very pronounced. Time-lapse is the extreme version of the cinematography technique of under cranking, and can be confused with stop motion animation. (in Wikipedia) [ top ]

     Can my camera do time lapse photography?

Well, all you need is that your camera takes a picture from time to time (30 secs for example). What is the problem? you can't do it by hand. Your camera will move slightly an ruin your movie. You can use a normal remote. but you gotta stay there by the side of your camera for hours, so you can press the remote yourself. So basically, you can do time-lapsed photography with most cameras.. but you really cant. unless you got a TEMPUS time-lapsed remote!      What if my camera doesn't have infrared capability?

Well, you're in luck. byMaC Labs have just came up with a solution for any camera. The solution is Tempus ALL. Unlike its brothers that work remotely by infrared, Tempus ALL is an mechanical shutter press system. You program it as a timer, as any Tempus remote, and you strap it firmly to your camera. Tempus ALL as its own "shutter finger" that you should align with the shutter button, and when the times comes, that mechanical finger presses the shutter for you. this way you can get a clear and shaken-free photo every time, at the right time.      My camera has infrared, but its not listed on the Supported Cameras page.

byMaC Inventions folks have tried hard to include every major brand of cameras on the compatibility list. If your brand is on the list, but your cameras MODEL isn't, if it has infrared capability, chances are it will work. Its probably a newer model, and we haven't tested it yet. But normally brand use the same IR codes that they had on older models, so you can order the TEMPUS remote specific to your brand, and in case it does not work, you can send it back, and be reimbursed.
If you own a infrared capable camera, and your BRAND isn't on the list, you can order a custom remote just for you camera! Yes, we do that :) just send us an e-mail with your cameras make and model, we will investigate and in 2 days time, we'll answer you back with probably good news, and we can build a TEMPUS remote just for you!

As long as your camera as a shutter button, chances are that TEMPUS ALL, the mechanical version of Tempus time-lapse device can work with it. All TEMPUS ALL does is act as your finger, pressing any shutter infinite number of times, with the exact time interval between presses of your choice. Check TEMPUS ALL page for more info: click here.      Who long can Tempus shoot continuously?

TEMPUS works with a single CR2025 or CR2032 battery. Battery life, depends on battery brand, delay between repetitions, and even temperature. in our tests, with a new battery and a delay between shots of 10 secs, a TEMPUS remote can run for up to 5 days straight. Just remember to turn it off when not using it. It is very easy to forget to turn it off. When you look at it, ON and between shots, you will see no light, and think it is off. [ top ]

 

     What is the Diference between ASTRUS and TEMPUS?

The 2 remotes are physically similar but have different functions. With TEMPUS, you set TIME BETWEEN PHOTOS on the remote, and it will make your camera take a picture from TIME to TIME. Better suited for time-lapse photography.
With ASTRUS you don't control time between photos, you control EXPOSURE TIME. You first set your camera to BULB mode, and with ASTRUS you can get photos with 30 min exposure for example. Most cameras only allow 30 seconds. with this remote you get as far as 30 minutes. It also has a repeat function, so it will take a photo with the amount of exposure time you choose, and it will repeat the order again and again until you turn it off.
ASTRUS is better suited for ASTROPHOTOGRAPHY where long exposures are need. You can take pictures of the night sky with star-trails.

The best way to explain it is with an example:
When you use TEMPUS, and you set it for 10 seconds interval between photos, for example, it will:

- Send IR signal to camera to take picture
- wait 10 seconds before repetition

- Send IR signal to camera to take picture
- wait 10 seconds before repetition

- Send IR signal to camera to take picture
- wait 10 seconds before repetition

- Send IR signal to camera to take picture
....

If your camera is in normal remote mode, it will take a picture every 10 seconds.

When you use ASTRUS, and you set it for a 2 minute exposure time, for example (your camera set in BULB mode), it will:

- Send IR signal to camera to open shutter
- wait 2 minutes
- Send IR signal to camera to close shutter
- wait 3 seconds before repetition

- Send IR signal to camera to open shutter
- wait 2 minutes
- Send IR signal to camera to close shutter
- wait 3 seconds before repetition

- Send IR signal to camera to open shutter
- wait 2 minutes
- Send IR signal to camera to close shutter
- wait 3 seconds before repetition

- Send IR signal to camera to open shutter
- wait 2 minutes
- Send IR signal to camera to close shutter
- wait 3 seconds before repetition
....

ASTRUS gets you 2 minute exposure photos, with a 3 second interval between closing and opening the shutter for the next photo.

Tips & Tricks for Time-lapse Photography


Camera Settings
First of all, make sure you have full batteries on you camera (or connected it to a power supply if you can). Make sure the batteries on your TEMPUS remote aren't near the end also.
Now the camera. We need to switch the camera into manual mode. You need to activate the REMOTE option on your camera (check the cameras manual). Use your test shots exposure information to set the aperture. Be sure to pick a shutter speed that will give you a good time lapse effect. If you have a shutter speed that is too fast you’ll end up with a choppy looking video. Although based on the subject you are shooting the shutter speed will vary. The length of the event is really a major factor which you must consider while selecting the speed and the number of shots. If the event takes 1 year to complete, then you must try to take few shots with a reasonable number of shots. However if you want to create a smooth and seamless video then the shutter speed must be high.

Set your camera to use JPG and at a size that you think is reasonable. If you don’t it will make your post processing more difficult as you’ll have to convert all your RAW images to JPG and then re-size them. Auto-white balance can change and fluctuate, especially if you’ll be shooting something for a while and the light gets brighter or dimmer over time. Setting it to manual helps ensure all your photos keep reasonably the same look. And also set your camera’s exposure manual as well. Once the camera settings are over, place the camera in a tripod inorder to avoid blur effects. If you don’t have a tripod then make use of some other base supports. Remember while taking the shots, the camera must be stable and fixed without any disturbances to get the perfect effect.

Timing
Before you can start clicking, you will need to establish time interval between frames. Here is a little bit of mathematics that can help you get the timing right. Since you will be presenting your photos in a movie, you will need between 20 to 30 frames per second. For your movie to be as smooth as possible, 30 frames will be ideal but 24 frames will also give you good results.
You should determine the duration of the process or event you are photographing and how long your movie will be. If your event is a very long one, say a baby developing in the womb then you will need long intervals between photos. But if the event is a short exercise like shooting melting pieces of ice, then you will need to take the photos more frequently.
So to show a video of a candle burning out in a minute when you are shooting 24 frames per second, let’s look at the math:
24 frames times 60 seconds = 1440 frames
Assuming that the candle will burn out in three hours or 10,800 seconds, then:
10,800 divided by 1440 frames = 7.5 seconds

For a sunset/sunrise try a 30 seconds delay.

For a busy street look very fast, try a 3 second delay.

TEMPUS remote Intervalometer
TEMPUS remote time-lapse is very easy to set up. After you camera is setup and you know how much time you want to set on the TEMPUS, its time to get it going.
You have 4 modes on your TEMPUS remote to set the time delay you want.

QUICK MODE - The fastest way to start shooting with your TEMPUS Remote Time-Lapse.
1 – with your camera set to REMOTE mode, and with you TEMPUS device turned OFF, press and hold the MODE button on the front of the TEMPUS.
2- with MODE still pressed, flick the power switch on the back of the TEMPUS unit. LED will lit briefly and them go off.
3- after desired delay, release MODE button.
NOTE: Delay between shots, equals the time you’ve held on to the MODE button.

Consult TEMPUS Manual for learning other modes to set time.

Leave the set up undisturbed till the event is finished completely. Once you have finished taking all the images, now import them to a PC and edit the images to adjust the brightness, contrast, size, etc. Inorder to create the video, you can use Quicktime Movie Pro for example. It is cheap and it can provide you all the necessary settings which are needed to produce a perfect video file. There are a lot of ways and free programs you can use to edit this photos into a movie.
